Plain text to PDF: when and why

A .txt file holds only characters: no fonts, colours, bold text or images. That makes it tiny and readable by any program, but plain-looking and easy to mangle when opened in different editors.

Turning it into a PDF gives it a fixed page layout that prints the same way everywhere and can be attached to an application or email without worrying how it will open.

Typical text files people convert include notes typed in Notepad, meeting minutes, server logs, exported chat histories, drafts of stories and simple data exports.

Line breaks are kept as they are. If your text has a hard break at the end of every line, those breaks show in the PDF. Long lines without breaks wrap to fit the page.

Columns lined up with spaces may not align perfectly, because many fonts give letters different widths. For tables, a spreadsheet converted with Excel to PDF works better.

Save your text as UTF-8 before converting, especially if it contains accented letters, currency symbols or non-Latin scripts. In Windows Notepad you choose the encoding in the Save As window.

For code or log files, check that very long lines are still readable after wrapping.

If you need headings, bold text or images, write the document in a word processor instead and use Word to PDF.

To pull text back out of a PDF, use PDF to TXT.

Text files are small, so the resulting PDF is usually well under 1 MB and easy to send anywhere.

When to use TXT to PDF

Use TXT to PDF to turn notes, logs, code snippets or exported data into a document that prints cleanly and is easy to attach.

TXT to PDF: common questions

Will formatting be added?

No. A TXT file has no fonts, bold or headings, so the PDF shows the plain text as it is.

Why do some characters look wrong?

Save the text file as UTF-8 before converting. Other encodings can turn accented letters and symbols into odd characters.

Do long lines get cut off?

Long lines wrap onto the next line in the PDF.
