PDF to BMP for older and specialist software

BMP is an uncompressed image format from the early days of Windows. Most people never need it, but some software still accepts nothing else.

Examples include older Windows programs, some label and card printers, embroidery and engraving machines, LED sign controllers and a few industrial systems.

Each page of your PDF becomes a separate BMP image.

BMP files are large because every pixel is stored in full. One page can easily be several megabytes, and a 20-page document can run to hundreds.

Check what your device needs before converting. Some machines want a specific pixel size or only accept black-and-white images, and the device manual usually lists these limits.

If the target software accepts PNG, use PDF to PNG instead. The quality is the same and the files are much smaller.

Convert only the pages you need. Running Extract PDF Pages first saves time and storage.

Text in a BMP image is just pixels, so it can't be searched or edited.

To go the other way, BMP to PDF turns bitmap images back into a document.

Store converted BMP files in their own folder so they don't fill up your normal documents folder.

When to use PDF to BMP

Use PDF to BMP when older Windows software, embroidery machines or some label printers only accept BMP images.
